Therapy services are billed on an hourly basis. The clinicians at Dr. Kathy Hubley Carruthers Counselling & Psychological Services charge an hourly fee of $170.00 (as of January 1st, 2016) for individual counselling and $190.00 (as of January 1st, 2016) for couples and family counselling. These fees are consistent with those recommended by the Association of Psychologists of Nova Scotia.

A therapy hour is 50 minutes long, with 10 minutes for file updates. Please note that documentation prepared on your behalf, at your request (i.e., letters to schools, reports to Insurance Companies, etc.) will be also be billed at our hourly rate of $170.00 per reporting hour (as of January 1st, 2016). Should a request for a report be received from a third party directly, we can request that the third party cover the cost of reporting. Reports will NOT be written to third parties without your express written informed consent.

While private psychological services are not covered by MSI, they are covered under some Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) and many extended health plans such as Medavie Blue Cross, Great West Life, SunLife, Maritime or Manulife, etc. Prior to coming to your first appointment, please contact your insurance provider and/or EAP program to inquire about your coverage for psychological services. We would be happy to issue you a receipt for insurance purposes. Please also be advised that psychological services are tax deductible as a medical expense, and you should retain a copy of your receipt for tax filing purposes.

Appointments cancelled without 24 hours notice will be charged to your account. You will have the choice of providing a credit card number to be placed on your confidential file, or to be invoiced directly in the event that 24 hours notice is not provided. Please note that Employee Assistance Programs and Insurance companies do not cover fees for missed appointments.

The fee for psychological testing is $ 175.00 per hour (as of January 1st, 2013) and must be paid before the report is released unless the report has been requested by a third party payer who has contracted our practice for the assessment, in which case the third party will cover the cost of testing. The cost of the published tests themselves, which is paid directly to the publisher by the clinician, may also be incurred by the client. Prior to proceeding with testing, a written cost estimate is provided to the client for consideration.
